Picture a winter duvet. Fluffy, it keeps you warm all night. Squash it flat under a mattress and it does almost nothing.
Loft insulation works the same way. Yet thousands of UK homeowners flatten theirs every year without realising it. Boards laid straight onto joists, boxes of books, old furniture. Each one presses the insulation down and quietly pushes energy bills up.

How Loft Insulation Actually Works
Mineral wool insulation does not block heat by itself. It traps millions of tiny air pockets within its fibres. Still air is a poor conductor of heat, so those pockets slow the movement of warmth from your rooms into the loft.
The performance depends on depth and loft. Current guidance recommends around 270mm to 300mm of mineral wool. At full depth, the material stays soft and open, and the air pockets do their job.
Compress it and the structure collapses:
- The air pockets close up
- The fibres pack together and conduct heat more readily
- The effective depth drops, sometimes from 270mm to under 100mm
Squashing insulation can roughly halve its effectiveness. You paid for a duvet and you are sleeping under a sheet.

How Homeowners Compress Insulation Without Realising
Compression rarely comes from neglect. It comes from sensible-sounding storage decisions:
1. Boarding directly onto joists. Standard joists are around 100mm deep. Recommended insulation is 270mm or more. Lay boards on the joists and you crush 270mm of insulation into a 100mm gap.
2. Storing items straight onto the insulation. Suitcases, decoration boxes and furniture press the material flat. The insulation under each item stops working, and it stays flattened even after you move the item.
3. Walking on the insulation. Repeated foot traffic along the same routes compacts the fibres over time.
4. Squeezing insulation around obstacles. Pushing insulation tightly under water tanks, around pipes or into eaves packs the fibres and closes the air pockets.
The Condensation Problem Nobody Mentions
Compression does more than leak heat. It changes how your loft breathes.
A loft needs airflow above the insulation to carry away moisture rising from the rooms below. When boards sit directly on top of squashed insulation, that airflow path disappears. Warm, humid air gets trapped against cold surfaces and condenses.
The results show up over time:
- Damp insulation that performs even worse
- Black mould on timbers and stored belongings
- A musty smell in the loft
- In serious cases, timber rot
Damp insulation compounds the original problem. Wet fibres conduct heat far better than dry ones, so the thermal performance drops again.

- Check for damp patches or mould near boarded areas. That signals trapped moisture.
