Government Announces £5k-£10k Grant For Home Improvement

Back in July you may have seen that the Government announced a plan to roll out a £2bn grant scheme, offering cash vouchers of up to £10k for insulation projects. The offering is part of a wider £3bn plan to help cut emissions throughout the nation.  It will only be available in England, as the governments elsewhere in the UK can have their own schemes. Moreover, it has recently been announced that homeowners and landlords will be able to receive the vouchers from late September, although details of which contractors will be allowed to deliver the service are still patchy. The scheme may end in March 2021, though this too is still currently unclear. The BBC quoted that:

“Hundreds of thousands of homeowners will receive vouchers of up to £5,000 for energy-saving home improvements, with the poorest getting up to £10,000.”

So, what is the aim of the new home improvement grant and how can you make the most out of it for your home?

What is the aim of the Home Improvement Grant?

In order to keep heating bills down, reducing the energy output of the nation as a whole, the government has pledged to pay for at least two-thirds of the cost of home improvements that specifically save energy.

For more information on what’s included in the grant, read the recent Which.co.uk article here.

If I have insulation installed, can I still add loft boarding?

The short answer is, Yes.

Traditionally, loft boarding has been placed directly on top of the insulation itself, compressing it and, as a result, reducing its efficiency. Although the insulation will help to contain some heat, it will not be working to its full potential when compressed. However, unless your installer explicitly tells you this, it would be otherwise unknown and hidden by the boards. Loft boarding may not be available to be included within the ‘Home Improvement’ grant, however do check when having your insulation installed. LoftZone is not planning to be part of the Home Improvement Grant scheme. Some of our installers may be, but we will have to wait to see what details the government finalise. Please ask our installers, nearer the time.

So, how can I make the most out of my Loft Insulation?

Raised loft boarding is the answer. Products like the LoftZone StoreFloor sit above the insulation rather that on top, thanks to its patented Tri- and Uni-Supports. This allows your insulation to expand, rather than compress, and keep the heat where it needs to be, in your home!

If you do decide to apply for the home improvement grant, request that the installer use LoftZone StoreFloor for your loft boarding to ensure you’re saving as much as possible on your bills, keeping your home warm, and most importantly helping the environment by reducing wasted energy.
